Not an exactly promising week, to be sure.  I gained a pound and Dad managed to get through the Easter Holiday remaining even.

I spent most of the weekend down with a cold, including a day off from work yesterday.  Workout on Sunday probably didn't get be much and some poor dinner choices over the weekend probably sabotaged the weight loss effort even more.

I'm drinking a lot more water now, but still have a ways to go to get out of the habit of getting any type of pop.

I'm going to also start in having more active off days.  Getting more into the stretching and some more resistance training on Mon-Wed-Fri.  I've got a resistance training book around here somewhere, I  hope!  I've not seen it since the move to Indy, so I've only got a few remaining boxes it might be hiding in!

3peat!

Sucks.  I've got a cold.

So knowing how I felt Thursday, I've decided to give week 3 a 3rd go around.

I felt a bit better than I did yesterday.  Still not anywhere near 100%.

I struggled through the last part of the last run segment and had to give it up and walk the last bits.  This cold has just knocked some wind out of me.  I just don't want to slide backwards, so hoping that sticking with week 3 will keep me somewhat stable.

Hopefully by Tuesday, I'll be much better.

The BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

Now it's time for

THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!

Now I'm committed! (or is that I should be committed?)  I'm now registered for the 2012 Walt Disney World Half Marathon!  In order to take advantage of the lower price registration and Disney Rewards Discount, I've gone ahead and registered.

That's right, as of today, I have 256 Days to get ready for this event.  Of course, I don't have any of the other little details worked out.  Like how I'm getting there (airline doesn't have bookings ready for next January yet), where I'll be staying, ect.  I do now have the biggest goal set to now achieve in my quest to loose 100 lbs!

Here is a little info on the event:

Walt Disney World® Marathon Weekend presented by CIGNA

January 5-8, 2012

Imagine a weekend of runs where every mile is filled with Disney fun at the 2012 WALT DISNEY WORLD® Marathon Weekend presented by CIGNA on January 5-8, 2012. Join us for a weekend of races that are magical as they are memorable, from Disney's Health & Fitness Expo to running through all four Theme Parks in the Marathon and all-new Marathon Relay. Complete with medals of Mickey Mouse and his friends, you'd be, well, goofy to miss it!
This years event, nearly 22,000 people ran in the Half Marathon alone!  This is going to be an event at Disney World unlike anything I've ever experience.  I'm scared and excited all at the same time.

My initial plan on this will be to fly down on Thursday, January 5th and get the initial pickup and sign-in all done.  Most likely staying on WDW property to take advantage of services like Magical Express and on-property transportation.  Thursday and Friday I'll have to resist the temptation to over-do it by going to the parks too much! (Is there such a thing at WDW?) Saturday, January 7th is the half marathon.  Then I'd plan on returning home on Monday, January 8th (hey, if I'm going down, I'm going to get SOME play time in!)  I may be hobbling around Sunday, but it'll be worth it to get some play time in at the parks :)

There is another fact of this that I'll also have to accept.  IT'S EARLY!  We're talking like you need to be up a like 2 or 3am to make it to the starting corrals for the starting of the release waves!  So Friday evening is definitely a must turn in early night!

There are also some other cool things the do that weekend.  There are also "packages" for those that want to cheer on their friends and loved ones during the race.  They have what they call ChEAR Sqaud pacakges.  They also have a site dedicated to give people an estimate of where they can view people running the race, the Spectator Tools.  For me it'll probably be set for Half-Marathon and a pace of 15 Minutes.  If you are slower than a 16 minute pace, they "sweep" you from the event.

So, here's to Running to 2012... AND BEYOND!

WHOA!

No, I didn't quit!  With storms here in Indy this week and then being really tired yesterday because of them, I'm just a little bit late with

THIS WEEKS UPDATE!

Another disappointing week for both Dad and I....

I was really hoping that this week would have been the first $25 donation to Give Kids the World.  Plus it's payday this week :)  I'll save some back for next week, because I'm sure I'm going to hit that first 10 pound mark!

I think returning to the Week 3 schedule in C25K was the best thing to do this week.  I'm beginning to feel a little under the weather.  Tonights run was a bit harder than Tuesdays, as near the end it was getting harder to breath.

I've begun to drink more water.  Still not entirely off the soda-pop yet, but working on it.  I take my Camelbak .75L Better Bottle into work now and fill it with the filtered water there.  Then here at home I'm using my Tervis 24oz Walt Disney World tumbler for water too. (Which I now see that Tervis now has many Disney themed glasses available now!!  *SIGH*  Well, I'll get one of the mugs sometime.  Maybe someone will get me one for my birthday next month!  LOL!

News on the heart rate monitor gadget... I'm basically screwed.  Postman says he delivered it, but there is no way to prove that he even delivered it to the CORRRECT address.  I can try and file a claim through E-Bay, but the likelihood of that amounting to anything is next to nil.  So, from now on, I'm making sure all my e-bay purchases are signature required shipments only.

Well, about that time again.  Thanks for reading! Regards,

Week 4 Day 1 of C25K FAIL!

Important lesson learned today:

Drink Water.  Hydrate properly!  I failed at this today, and would up with a massive cramp in my left calf at the 11:00 minute mark.  I paused the treadmill and noticed that I wasn't sweating like I had been, then realizing that I'd not had any water all day long.  I drank some water and worked most of the cramp out and tried to continue on.

I did about half of the running in the segments, walking the rest.

Here are some guidelines for those of you playing at home:

2 hours before exercise - 2 cups water

10-15 minutes before exercising - 1 to 2 cups water

Every 15-20 minutes while exercising - 1/2 to 1 cup

10-20 minutes after exercising - 1 to 3 cups
*1) shamelessly taken from "The Beginneing Runner's Handbook" by Ian MacNeill and the Sport Medicine Council of British Columbia.

With this, I'm going to finish out this week by doing W3 D2 and D3 over again.  So, yes, I'm calling DO OVER!

The week filled with a big bowl of SUCK

So I started off last Sunday with Week 3 Day 1 of C25K.  I also got something off of E-bay that I'd really like to start working with, a heart rate monitor gadget.  Polar RS300X SD

Awsome!  Right?  I had an E-bay bucks voucher for just over $30, so this purchase was down to $90 for an item that's $250 new!  I absolutely stoked about getting this!

*begin ominous music*  It was shipped via USPS Priority Mail.  It was to be at the house on Tuesday.  I checked the tracking Tuesday night because I didn't have my cool new gadget in hand!  Hmmm...  USPS tracking says it was delivered just after noon.  Strange.  Looked outside.  Checked with neighbor.  Mom was here at the house all day and no one rang the door bell.

*begin Benny Hill chase music*  I call USPS.  If you've never done this before, I recommend that you have blood pressure medicine on hand BEFORE you call.  This is an exercise in futility.  Four different menu options gave me the same result.  The same information that was on the tracking web page.  It SAYS it's been delivered.  Finally after meandering through some seemingly random menu options, I FINALLY get to talk to someone.  I now have a "case number".  Big whoop.  They also took down my phone number.  "If you don't hear back from us in a couple of days, call back".  Well, I'm calling back on Monday, but it appears that my cool new gadget is now in the hands of someone that just decided to keep a package not marked for them.  You know, when you call something Track & Confirm, I'd figure that CONFIRM part would mean that they checked to make sure they were delivering it to the right !@$#!@$'n address.  Apparently it just means "Yeah, we delivered it someplace."

I've read through E-bay and Paypal gobldygook, and it's pretty much looking like I'm just out of luck on my money.  This is my first bad experience in 10 years of dealings with E-bay.  To boot, it's not the sellers fault.  They seem to have DONE their part.  It's the USPS's fault for not delivering it correctly.

So that pretty much put me in a foul mood for most of this week.  I wasn't even all that excited Tuesday night when we did our weigh in.

Then the last part, what would have been my best friends 45th birthday:
Brian K Morton - April 16, 1966 - October 21, 1992
For whatever reason, this year has seem to hit me harder on this than has been in the recent past.  The day was just a crappy day for me all together.  Ending what's been a crappy week.
Well, we'll see what next week brings.
Thanks for reading this rant!  Regards,

Week 3 Report

Now on to this weeks results between Dad and I:

Another 3 pounds for me and it will be time to make my first donation to Give Kids the World.  Let's hope that is next week!  :)

Today was Week 3 Day 2 on the C25K workout plan.  The app on the iPhone went a little bit nuts today.  I started off and the music wouldn't play.  I figured what the hey, I'll just live without music today.

I knew something was wrong when I hit minute 7 of the 5 minute warm up...  Then the app hit the first 90 second run segment.  2 and a half minutes later I'm really fumbling with the phone to try and figure out what is going on!  I get back down to walk speed and I restart the app.  Luckily the app allows you to kind of skip around in the segments, probably for this type of reason.  Ended up I did about 6 minutes extra today than what was "scheduled".

If I thought I was leaking after Sundays workout, it was doubly so today!  I've gone ahead and picked up some "tech T-shirts" from Target.  They are on the cheap side, which was good.  They're made by Champion.  Very colorful, to say the least.  I got 3 at $10 each, one GREEN!, one YELLOW! and one ORANGE!.  Exclamations, because yes, they are LOUD!  So far it has been much more comfortable to workout in those shirts than my regular cotton t-shirts.

Now that the run segments are getting longer, I'm finding that I'm going to need to do something different in the downstairs department.  Jean shorts just aren't really cut out for this type of workout... if you know what I mean.  (If you don't know what I mean, I'M not spelling it out for you.)

Well, going to wrap this report up for now.  Until next time

Woof! Start of C25K Week 3, Day 1

When you look at Week 3, it really doesn't look like much:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk, then do two repetitions of the following:
  • Jog 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
  • Walk 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 400 yards (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 400 yards (or three minutes)
Five-minute cool down.

Important part is... I DID IT.  I had to slow down a little bit on the 2nd 3 minute run, but I didn't slow it down that much (from 4.0 down to 3.9, then 3.8 last minute).

Today was an awesome day here in Indy.  I started out this morning by mowing the lawn and finally putting down some grass seed in the bald spots in the front yard.  Watched some Indycar and had a good dinner of some Shepherd's Pie from a recipe from a Prevention Cookbook I picked up the other week.  The reason I spotted the book to begin with was that the Shepherd's Pie was on the cover.  We hunted around for a butcher shop that actually sold Lamb and it was worth it.  The recipie needs some tweaking (too much onion!).  But very good none-the-less.  I digress.  The weather was "unseasonably hot".  It felt good to me!

After waiting for dinner to settle in, I then tackled W3D1.  This is also when I found that "unseasonably hot" was impacting my workout.  I felt like I poured buckets of sweat.  I was really feeling like the Kirk line in the new Star Trek movie... "I feel like I'm leaking."

Week 2 Report

Just finished with Dad on the phone a little bit ago.

Looks like I took week 2 with a 3 pound weight loss versus Dad's 2 pound loss.

Standings are as such:

Kipp Weekly% Overall% Dad Weekly% Overall%
3/22/2011   275 227
3/29/2011   275 0.00% 0.00% 227 0.00% 0.00%
4/5/2011   272 3 1.09% 1.09% 225 2 0.88% 0.88%

With tonight brining me to Week 2 Day 2 of C25K completed.  This week it is 2 minutes of walking interspersed with 90 seconds of "running".  Sunday on Day 1 of this was kinda rough, since I skipped a couple of days last week brining 2 days in a row of workouts.

Tonights workout wasn't as bad as Sunday, but tonight I was definitely warmer.  I'm looking forward to weather here in Indy to finally starting to be pleasant so I can start to attempt some of this off of the treadmill and on actual solid ground.  I've been reading that adding some incline while on the treadmill will better simulate running on real ground, but I've not used that function as much as I probably should.  I'll try and remember to maybe start putting it in on Days 2 & 3 of the workout schedule to increase the difficulty a little at a time.

Well, I've got an early day at work tomrrow, so I'm cutting loose with this weeks update now.

Lesson Learned...

Yea!  New shoes today!  I've switched from the motion control of the Brooks Addiction 8's I've been wearing, to the Stability style of the Brooks Adrenaline

After doing Week 1 Day 3 of C25K today, my feet are feeling fine!  These new shoes are soooo much lighter than the Addiction!  In my previous runs the past couple of weeks, my feet were kinda achy after my workout.  I was chalking it up to, you know, being fat.  I cannot recommend enough for anyone considering starting up on something like C25K, go to a REAL running store.  A running store will actually have you walk/run in a pair of shoes on a treadmill or in their store.  They will be looking for how your foot falls while you are doing your thing.

They will then make recommendations for you.  Since I have such a wide foot (4E!), I'm rather limited in my choices in shoes that actually come in a width that large.  So far, Brooks have seem to fit my feet the best.  So far, every running store I've been to have all had the same mantra.  "You buy the shoe that fits you, not the shoe you like how it looks".  For the most part, I've found that I can live with how most of the Brooks line looks.

Now, on to my lesson learned.  I worked late Thursday night, which would have been my normal 3rd day in the C25K cycle.  I skipped it because I was so tired that night.  I then proceeded to skip it last night also.  Today, I can really tell that I skipped too much time, as my legs feel more like they did at the end of last week, instead of how well they felt earlier this week.

I want to get back onto my original schedule of Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday.  So I think tomorrow will be a challenge.

I think I will progress onto Week 2 of C25K beginning tomorrow!

Kipp
