Melting in the sun!

B210K W2 D1 - Finally!
It's been a rough week so far.  I finally got Day 1 of Week 2 in of Bridge to 10K.  It was definitely a HOT one out there tonight.  Even at close to 8pm, it was a feels like temp in the high 90's!

I got it done and I have to figure out how I'll do the next 2 days.  I'll see how I feel about doing 3 back to backs and then have Sunday as a rest type day.

Luggage arrived!
As I was leaving to do my run, there was a package at the front door!  My luggage already arrived!

When I ordered it Tuesday, my receipt said that it would arrive on the 17th!

My new luggage arrived!
New Shoes!

When I got home from work there was already a package waiting for me, my new Brooks Ghost 9's where waiting for me!
Old Tread
New Tread
The first picture is the first pair at 62 miles!  You can see by the picture of the new shoes how badly worn the tread is!

Tonight was the first run in them and they felt great.  Not that the other pair feel bad or anything, it's just worrisome that I had almost worn through them already!

The new pair have 4 miles on them now, and I'll keep track and watch this pair to see how they hold up!

Melt!

Yeah, it's got nothing to do with being hot.  It's still one of my favorite songs.

Before the weigh-in tomorrow, lets recap last week!

Totals for Last week!
My mileage for last week dropped a lot to 15.12 miles. My nine week total is now 178.1 miles!

SunMonTueWedThurFriSat
172211326810882140913234539712130

Coming in at a grand total of: 76,223 Steps for the week.  Since I've been keeping track during this training, that now makes 587101 steps!

Last Thursday, our air conditioning went out.  I ended up spending a lot of time on the phone Thursday and Friday in order to get someone out right away.

Then as soon as the AC guy left Friday, Mom and I left for our Family Reunion weekend!  So, it ended up that I had very little walking accomplished.

Then on Saturday, I got up "early" and went to the Panhandle Pathway as I had planned on doing.  It started off cool at about 64 degrees, by the time I finished though, the sun had already warmed it up 10 degrees!

It was a good run.  They had some kind of biking event on the pathway, as about 100 riders ended up passing me while I was out for my Bridge to 10K training run.

I really wish there were more of those types of trails here on the Southeast side of Indy!

B210K First Week Review
The first week went well!

On the first night, I did struggle with the last 10 minute run, but I made it through!

So, we continue increasing the overall running times. The second week takes us from a total of 57 minutes per day of training, up from the first weeks 53 minutes.  Big change this week is the move from 10 minute running segments, up to 15 minutes.

It's the SHOES, PART DUCK!
I received a reply from Brooks and they are sending me a replacement pair of shoes!

I'm pretty sure I'll have to send the original back to them (?).  IF I didn't have to, I could make them my walking shoes.  I bet they have to go back.

I'm hoping they'll be here by the end of this week.

Counting down!
Vacation in 33 days!  Just over a month!!  I'm starting to get very excited!

As long as my B210K plan goes well, I expect that my week down in Orlando / Disney World will be my first week of my Half-Marathon training plan!

149 Days until Marathon Weekend!  Those days just seem to be flying off of that counter!

I saw a film last night, oh boy!
I went to see Suicide Squad last night.  So far, it's been the most enjoyable DC movie to see so far.

It's Will Smiths best movie in AGES.  Margot Robbie absolutely steals the show as Harley Quinn!

It was far from a perfect movie, but it was really fun to see!

Me 2011 wins the week.  I've finally hit 10 pounds lost!  This has been a horrible struggle.  It averages out to 1 pound per week, but still... ugh.

Hopefully with the longer runs, I'll continue to make progress.

B210K Week 1 Progress
This is the first week of Bridge to 10K.  I won't lie, the 4th 10 minute run segment on Monday I struggled hard with it!  After doing the 5K on Sunday and then turning around and doing almost the same thing on Monday was rough!

Tonight was hot for Day 2!  I feel like I sweat out 10 pounds, but I didn't.   I was able to manage all 4 10 minute run segments much better tonight.

For day 3, I will be doing that Saturday morning before the family reunion.  I'm going to be running on the Pan Handle Pathway, which I've done several times before in the past 5 years.  If I had a bike rack for the car, I'd take that and do a bike ride on it too!

Shoes!

This is a picture of my new Brooks Ghost 9's that I just got on 7/11!!  They look like how my shoes normally look at around 200 miles.

These just have 55 miles on them!  I've gotten in contact with Brooks Quality Team, and I should have an answer tomorrow on what they are going to do.

Counting Down!
Lunchtime Friday, I'll be heading up north for Family Reunion!

38 days until my Vacation!  I'm really excited to be flying down.  I'm looking at new luggage, since my old Samsonite tank has about had it.
Samsonite Super Tank
TSA Broke the bottom clasp in my 2nd or 3rd trip with it.  The keys to lock it have now both broken.  So, even babying the clasp, I can no longer get it secure.  So, now it just hangs partially open.

The hardside has been nice to have, but this day & age of the airlines hitting you with fees for everything, the last straw I've about had with it was with Delta.  They have a checked bag fee to start with, THEN I got hit with an overweight bag fee!  So, it was an additional $50 on top of the $35 checked bag fee to fly home with it overweight!

I'm looking at the eBags TLS 25".  I've had an eBags carry-on for a long time and it's held up great!  So, I'm willing to give one of their large pieces a chance.  They must be phasing this model out, as they no longer have the Black one.  It's down to Red & Eggplant.  Other colors they had were a blue that would have perfectly matched my carry on and a lime green, which would have been great for my Disney running teams colors!  :)

I don't understand eBags sales though...  It was down to $151 yesterday and it's back up to $190 today.  Okay, I guess I'll have to watch it each day to see what price it is and try and snag it on a down day & hope they don't run out!  I'll not be buying an "eggplant" colored one...

This all means is 154 days until Marathon Weekend!  Just a little over 5 weeks until my 1/2 Marathon training begins.

Watch This!

A whole new game!

Today
I started off my morning with a long overdue haircut.  Laura did a fantastic job as usual and I was on my way with a much tidier head of hair.

Next up was to go get the car washed.  My PLAN was to go south from the haircut and grab a donut and unsweet iced tea from Dunkin Donuts on the way.  Well, with an amateur bike race downtown and construction on I-65, it took me a LONG time to get to my morning break!

They were out of double chocolate and they took FOREVER to get around to waiting on me.  I settled for a chocolate frosted cake donut and got my iced tea.  The counter person was sorry that I had to wait so long and gave me a discount.  I got a free donut!

Next up was the car wash.  I made it just in time!  I was only 3 or 4 cars back.  By the time I got up to the front and went in to pay, the line was wrapped around the building!  I go to a local place called Sparkling Image.  They still wipe down your car and do the inside for the same price that the other automatics just send you on through and let you drip dry.  It's $25 well spent for me.  Car is now all sparkly and tidy.

I just went in for socks... I SWEAR!
Since I was close by, I know I had gotten a sale flyer from my local running store (Blue Mile) that is across the street from the car wash.  So, I went on over there to see about some new running socks.

I picked out a pair and the sales lady let me know that if I got 3, I could get one free.  Yeah, at $15 for 2 pair on a brand I've never used before, I'll stick with just the one right now.

She asked if I was training for anything, so I did a brief history and told her I'm repeating what I did for my first half marathon 5 years ago.  I then let her know that my Adrenaline 16's were starting to cause issues with my shins. (ARRRH!  No spellcheck!  I'm NOT trying to spell my name!).

She then asked me when was the last time I had my gait checked.  Well, that was over 5 years ago when I first started training for my first half marathon!

She told me that I should have it checked at least every two years and that it would have been a good idea to especially do it after my sprained ankle.

So, my next adventure begins...

The demon possessed Treadmill-o-death(TM)!
Okay, I THOUGH MY treadmill was bad.  The treadmill they have at the running store is TOUCHY!  It's a fancy "Boston Marathon" edition Nordic Track.  Really beefy looking treadmill with a touch screen built in.

Well, the quick speed choice is a bit different than the Treadmill-o-doom here at home.  I'm used to 1-12, meaning 1-12 MPH.  Theirs, is rather upside-down.  That one is set to Minutes per mile!  I almost did a faceplant!  It sped up FAST!  Then, I tried to just use the + button to start it up to a pace I could deal with.  Well, I wasn't watching the screen and apparently holding my finger on the + wound it up to light speed again!

So, the sales lady then offered to set it up for me and then we stared walking!  WHEW!

They now record you on an iPAD with super slo-mo playback ability.  She was able to run back and forth in the video to watch my gait.

A Problem Found!

Well, after 5 years of tooling around in shoes for over-pronation, it appears that I have been "corrected".  My gait is now almost perfectly neutral!

My left foot still turns ever so slightly, but that could be from the fact that its still not back up to 100% strength from the sprain a few years back!  My right foot still kicks out a bit in the stide, but as far as striking and moving through the gait, it's now perfectly neutral!

So, for those of you that are thinking your newest kix are crap because they are causing you issues, when was the last time you had your gait checked with your local running store??

What does it all mean!??!

Well, it means that I needed a new pair of shoes, stat!  She set me up with a NEW pair of Brooks Ghost 9's!  They just came out "officially" at the beginning of this month!
Would you look at that!  COLORS!  The Ghost line of shoes has won Brooks a lot of awards, so I'm hoping that this iteration will be an excellent shoe.  She let me know that they have a 30-day guarantee, so if I have ANY issues to bring them right back and she will set me up in something else.

After my purchase, she then told me to throw out my Adrenaline 12's that I wore into the store.  They're old and the tread is almost worn through.  She said I wasn't doing myself any favors by using them as walking shoes.

She also told me to come back in October, as I'll probably have run through this pair by then.  She also told me to have my gait rechecked, so they can be doubly sure that I'll have the best suited pair of shoes going into the 1/2 Marathon!

Shopping!

Once back home, I picked up Mom and took her shopping.  She had some birthday money burning a hole in her pocket so we went to Khol's, Bed Bath Bodyworks, 1/2 Price Books (mainly for me, but I didn't find anything.  She did though), Bed Bath & Beyond, and then finally Barns & Noble.

Once we were done with that, I took her out for a quick dinner at Five Guys.

C25K Week 5 Day 3!

I rested for about an hour after getting home before I changed into my running gear.  This time, strapping on the new Ghost 9's!

So far, so good!  I completed Week 5, Day 3 with very few issues.  In fact, I was feeling so good that I was not judging my pace well and had to slow down a few times in the longer running segments.

The new shoes will take a little bit of getting used to, but man... were they cushy!  I think I need to tighten up the left shoe a little bit, as it felt like I was sliding around a bit.

Oh, and I DID get the new socks.  They come 2 pair to a pack at the same price that comparable pairs come in a single pack.

No issues with them tonight, but I'm no where near any long distance runs yet!

Hopefully they'll be alright.  No issues with them and they felt fine tonight.

Counting down!

My counters over to the side tell me I have 63 days until vacation and 179 days until Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend!  I have 4 weeks of Couch to 5K to get through, so I'll wrapping that up soon!

Planning stages.
I'm looking into possibly modifying the Half Marathon training program that I'm using.  The longest run that it has you do is 10 miles.  I remember from 5 years ago that after I past that 10 mile mark, I was just about toast.  It made those last 3 point 1 miles a grueling task!

So, I'm thinking of hybridizing Hal Higdon and Jeff Galloway a bit and morphing it into a fuller routine.

Galloway's program runs for 19 weeks, with 2 weeks being a wind down AFTER the half marathon event.

If I go through C25K and B210K without repeating anything, I can start my half marathon training 4 weeks earlier.  That gives me 16 weeks, versus Galloways 17 weeks to event.

So, I figure if I increase the weekday millage repeats to extend Higdon's plan out to 16 weeks and mix in Galloway's method of long miles on the weekend, I may come out ahead and possibly be able to beat my time from 5 years ago.

Galloway's plan has you go 14 miles 2 weeks BEFORE the 1/2 Marathon Event.  So, in theory, having already gone a longer distance the Half Marathon should be a little bit easier than the last long run in training!  Right?

We shall see!

FROZEN!

Vacation Has Begun

With the horrible COLD weather here in Indianapolis, work was called off Today and it has been canceled for Tomorrow.  I'm hoping that everything goes okay when I go to fly to Florida on Wednesday.

Hey, if all else fails, I could just Drive down!  LOL!  no.  Only if it were drastic would I even consider that option at all.

Crowd calendar from Touringplans.com

I'll take it, but I rather wish it would be a little bit cooler for runners Saturday and Sunday.  Especially Sunday.  I know last year the heat was brutal and I had trouble with "just" a half.  With being in the Full Marathon this year, that's just going to add another layer to this.

Excited

I'm now getting excited to be heading down to Disney.  I'm still dreading Sunday, but whatever happens, it's much better than never having started to begin with.

Packing

My running shoes have been in my carry-on bag for a couple of days now.  I've added some of my running gear to it.  I've got the GPS watch on the charger and many other items charging up one last time before heading down.

I've been doing laundry today, with my day off of work.  I've been trying to figure out what exactly I'll be taking down.  I've settled on a couple pair of jeans and then mostly shorts & t-shirts.  Thankfully, I'm flying Airtran/Southwest that I booked through Southwest, so no baggage fee.

I'm just going to take my little camera this time and I probably will NOT be running with it.

New Slogan

When I get back from Florida next week, the real work begins.

2014 - The Road to Goofy 2015!

The plan is to sign up for AT LEAST the 2015 Goofy, if not the Dopey.  Let me define what that is exactly.

Goofy Race and a Half Challenge - Run the 1/2 Marathon Saturday, Run the Full Marathon on Sunday.

Dopey - Run 5K Thursday, 10K Friday, 1/2 Marathon Saturday and run the Full Marathon on Sunday!

2015 is an anniversary year for Goofy, so our racing team is gung-ho on going for this achievement!  If you enter the Dopey, you still get the Goofy medal too!

With this idea in place, my goal is to run 1,000 miles in 2014!

A weak ankle week.

Ankle injury one week on

I think I have most of my range of motion back in that left ankle now.  The only time I have twinges of any pain are when I go down stairs.

I have a little bit of stiffness when I get up in the morning, but the exercises I do to keep my Flexor Hallucis Longus muscle in shape quickly get that stiffness out.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to give it a trial run on Tuesday.  With new shoes (more on that later) and going on the treadmill-o-doom, I'm hoping that it'll provide enough cushion that the ankle won't give me any troubles.

59 Days until Disney World Check-in

My Disney Experience website had my customization up for my MagicBand for Marathon Weekend.  I've gone with WiSH team colors for this one!  If we get one of these every trip, I might as well take advantage of having different colors.  So my next MagicBand will be Green/Black.

My new MagicBand

If you don't choose, it defaults to grey, which is what color my first one is.

It's the SHOES!

Well, the shoes that I plan on participating in the full marathon with.  If I can run this week, I'm going to start breaking these in ASAP.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 14
Yep... wide width once again only comes in White/Blue.  I picked them up the night before the Monumental Half Marathon and have only really tried them on and walked around in them a tiny bit.  They were MUCH more comfortable feeling than the shape my New Balance shoes are in currently.

The remainder of my borked training schedule

Reality check time.  Obviously this weekend will NOT see me do 17 miles.  The most to this point in my training I've done is 10.5-ish.  I'm thinking that at this late point in the schedule, I'm going to have to forego the fallback weeks and do as slow of a progression as I can leading up to the 20 miler in week 15.

Weighty issue

Yes, once again I'm way up in weight.  The good news is, I'm starting back down again, as my shorts are once again to the point that I need to wear a belt to keep them up.  I went out to lunch more than once this past week.  Once to a supplier chili cook off and the next day was to McAllisters Deli   McAllisters is one of the places that I have a set meal to order, as their website allows you to create a meal and see what it comes out nutrition wise.  I stuck to it, and ordered what I was supposed to.  (1/2 and 1/2 lunch deal, 1/2 New York steamer sandwich and a bowl of Chicken Tortilla Soup).  I also had unsweet Iced Tea.

This week will prove to be much easier on the going out to lunch deal, I don't have money to go out to lunch this week!  LOL!  Lunchbox for me!
