Roll up for the Magical Mystery Weigh-in!

Magical Mystery Weigh-in!?
Okay, so my Bluetooth scale started freaking out last week.  When I stepped on it, it looked like I was a contestant on The Biggest Looser when they do their weigh-ins.  The numbers were just going everywhere and then it finally went to ERR.

I figured, the batteries were over a year old, so I replace them.  Yeah... well, now it's telling me that I weigh 302 pounds!  So, I think I'm back in the market for another new bathroom scale.

So, I had to do my best estimate on the big tank scale at work.  Looks like I had a bad week, both 5 years ago and this year.  I managed to do worse this go around.t

The week goes to Me 2011!

Totals for Last week!
My mileage for last week was still down at 21.22 miles. My ten week total is now 199.32 miles, just under 200!

Coming in at a grand total of: 76,703 Steps for the week, just slightly above t he week before.  Since I've been keeping track during this training, that now makes 663804 steps!

B210K Second Week Review
The second week went to crap!

The past couple of weeks have just been rough on the training schedule.  Between weather and things happening that took up time, I've been a little off track.

I've moved straight into week 3 day 2 starting today.  It was just getting too rough to try and "catch up".

We're up to 63 minutes of activity!  With the heat and humidity, I've not pushed it.  I just want to make sure I get through it.

Today I did the Week 3 Day 2 and it went pretty good.  I'm able to keep a slow pace in the heat and humidity.  I remain moving throughout the whole 17 minutes.  My pace isn't exactly steady, but it's still a work in progress.

I would like to start taking some time, either in the morning (HAHAHA), or on the weekend to start testing some different intervals to see how I want to start my 1/2 Marathon training.

RunDisney "minus's" more

WARNING: RANTING AHEAD!

There used to be a term that happened at Disney all of the time.  They would "PLUS" things.  Add little bits here and there that added to the over all experience at Walt Disney World.  Not so much any more.  Bob Iger and crew are now all about the bottom line at Disney.  So, now instead of PLUSING, we're getting MINUSING.

5 years ago, my first race at Disney World, we actually go stuff in the goody bags when you went to pick up your bib and shirts.  Each year, it's gotten less and less, until now its a "VIRTUAL" goody bag.

Other races I've attended in the intervening years, we've gotten a wide variety of things.  The Indy MINI and Monumental races, you can still pick up some nice freebie stuff at the Expo and you also get a few items.

Now-a-days, at the end of a Disney race now net's you a "box of junk food" and a bottle of water.  A banana too, if they have any left (we back of the pack folk get slim pickins at the end of a race).  I remember that first race, trying to juggle so much stuff (a banana, an apple I think, a powerade, a water, a cookie or something like that), that I had to hand it off to my Dad so I could actually get things situated.

So... what have they done now?  In my opinion... this one is a HUGE F.U. to the loyal Disney racers.

On or about August 1st, they are no longer allowing deferments of RunDisney races.  So, if you end up sick or break a leg or something, you are S.O.L.

Now, those of you that don't know (well, 99% of the people that read this DO KNOW) that Disney races are E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E!!  They are some of the most expensive races you can enter.  It was the bonus fact that you did get a lot of extra stuff.  But like everything else in the parks, they've been slowly minusing things here and there.

This last item is a HUGE minus.  For such an expensive race to just up and tell you that you're out of luck that you broke your ankle 3 weeks before the race.  It WAS a pain in the rear to even defer a Disney race.  They would keep your money, but you could just register the next year and THEN they would refund your money for the previous year, minus handling!  WHOA!

So, here are the breakdowns for 2017:

Dopey $560 (Marathon, 1/2 Marathon, 10K, 5K)
Goofy $365 (Marathon, 1/2 Marathon)
Marathon $180
1/2 Marathon $170
10K $110
5K $65

So, someone registered for Dopey and breaks their ankle training for this INSANE challenge, is out $560!!

This sucks.
Mr. Yuk face indeed!

Counting down!
Vacation in 23 days!  I'm SO READY for this vacation!!

140 Days until (my last?) Marathon Weekend!  Those days just seem to be flying off of that counter!

I beat the rain, in Indiana!

Weekly Weigh-in!
180!  Down 3 pounds!  FINALLY!  One of the guys at work commented yesterday that I looked like I was thinning down.  I was like "I wish the scale would tell me that!"  Hopefully this is the beginning of a new trend!

This weeks winner is Me 2016!

Getting those steps in...
Tonight was just an evening walk.  Weatherman said that storms would be here around 8 to 8:15.  I rushed around to get out there and hopefully get my walking done before the rain came.

I get to the point that I figure I've made it past the auto goal and come on into the house.  I see that I'm 120 steps short of the auto goal!  So I jogged in place for a couple of minutes and then hit the shower!

Auto goal is now up to 11,267 steps!  Once I get the auto goal over 12,500, I'm going to leave it manually set for that.

Oh, it rained for about 2 minutes around 9:10....  I had plenty of time.

Couch to 5K Week 6 Day 1
Yesterday was the first day of week 6, and I made it though!  I was able to do both 8 minute segments without stopping or switching to a walk.  Considering it was 84+ degrees and humid, I'll take it!  The data from the watch shows that I started out both run segments a little fast, but I quickly evened it out and actually kept a fairly even pace throughout.

Five years ago, my pacing was very erratic.  So, I appear to be getting better at judging my pace.

The feedback from the watch data is now beginning to tell me that I should be pushing a little bit more now, as my heart rate is getting better now.  For Day 2 I'll see if I can manage to get the pace to stick around the 16 minute/mile mark.

I'm making headway on endurance!  I'm also working on my breathing a lot more, paying attention to when I start with short breaths and such.  Trying to make sure that I'm breathing in and out.  I'm starting to get the hang of trying to time it so I'm not always breathing on the same step.

For me, I've started to get into a pattern.  Two longer breaths and then a shorter one.  This seems to have the effect that I want.  Trying to count steps was a pain, but coming up with this pattern seems to match what I want in steps.

For those not in the know - if you ALWAYS breath in on say, the left step, you run the chance of getting side stitches.  I've had this many times, so I'm trying to avoid this.  They way to fix it is to try and time it so that you change the step you breath on.  Most people count steps, in on 4, out on 3... ect.  I found that a bit hard for me to do.  So I'm trying to come up with a pattern that's not involving me trying to count while I run.

Council!

I had Rick take a look at my revised training plan for the Half Marathon.  He suggested some minor tweaks and I think it looks good.

At least the feedback wasn't "You're freakin' NUTS!"

There is a Santa Hustle here in Indy when I'm due for a 12.5 mile run.  Rick says that if I should happen to decide to do this race, he might come down and join me.

Just thinking of it makes me nervous.  Just knowing what happened when I was trying to go for the Full Marathon at Disney and spraining my ankle at the Monumental Half Marathon...

I'm giving it thought.  I want to make up my mind on it soon, so plans can be made!

Running a race in a Santa hat, beard and hoodie...  We shall see.

A Year of Silence

What happened before

Chicago Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon July 20, 2014

In May, the doctor prescribed a new medication for me.  I had NO idea how it would affect me in a race setting.  Some things learned:

1) GU / Cliff Gels, no longer a good idea for me.  This new medication didn't like the pure sugar bomb effect these have and tore me up.
2) Gatorade/Power-aide, A few drinks of these had me feeling like I wanted to barf.

Rick had other types of replenishment and they were much more acceptable to my stomach.

With pretty much no training, it took everything I had to continue on.  Without Rick and Mike, I'd have bailed when my stomach went nuclear.

Since this event, I have found Hammer Nutrition products do not have these adverse effects on me.

Air Force Marathon  September 20, 2014

Bailed on this event.  No training due to being a lazy ass and getting ready to move the following week or so after this event.

I also had a "not-mandatory" but suggested mandatory company function to attend that evening.

Rick went to this event and didn't have a good go of it.  It was very hot and humid.  Not an ideal situation for a Marathon held at an Air Force field and area, or any type of area really.

Indianapolis Monumental 1/2 Marathon November 1, 2014

Rick came down for this one again!  I had next to no training for this one.  Moving at the beginning of October had played havoc with any plans I had originally made.  Plus the fact that I was still just being a lazy ass.

Rick stuck with me to about the 10K/Half Way point.  At that time, he went on ahead, as the portion of the course we were still on was about to officially "close".  We could still progress on, only on the side walks.

It was much better once I got to the point where the full marathon and half marathon courses re-joined.  They had done something different.  They actually marked the left side of the road as the half-marathoners and the right side as the full.  So, here I was, practically the sole person on the half marathon side as the full marathoners zipped by me on the right.

Many words of encouragement from the full marathoners!  I had a Mickey Mouse hoodie on, and many of them would go by and shout "GO MICKEY!".  It brightened up my mood considerably.

I finished.  Not last, that I found out later, but darn near so.

Space Coast 1/2 Marathon November 30, 2014

Rick was thinking of bailing on this event, until I let him know that I was signed up for it too.

Rick stuck with me for the first several miles, almost to the half-way point.  We walked most of that time.  After Rick departed, I fell into a decent pace until the half way point.

This race is an out and back race, so the wind was to the back on the way out.  Coming back, it was in my face.  I kept going along, getting some running in when I could.

I finished.

2015 Disney World Marathon Weekend

I signed up for the Goofy anniversary race(s).

My last preparation for this event, was the Space Coast Half.

The Half Marathon.

Dead. Last. Finish.

I started my battle with the Balloon ladies coming into Magic Kingdom.  There is a hard cutoff right at the area where you double back to enter into the Magic Kingdom.  We had to be in front of them when we got to that bus.  I made it.

The next battle was on the road going past Polynesian Resort.  The ladies let us know once again, if we weren't in front of them by the time they passed the bus, you were done.  I managed to get in front of them with great effort.  This is where I know 2 of the blisters popped.

The remainder of the course, I was followed closely by the safety team on bikes.  They let me know that as long as I could communicate with them and I was making an effort to continue, I was probably safe.  They spoke with me often, if I started to slow down.  They urged me onward, or else they would have to pull me.

On the way back to Epcot, I was surrounded by many of the Team in Training coaches, as they were concerned about their last person.  A young lady that was participating in the race, very pregnant.  Between her and I, we were the LAST.  Even though I wasn't part of Team in Training, they commented on my WiSH team shirt, saying that they saw those shirts at as many races as they were at.  They loved our saying, and it certainly was going to apply to me on this day.

Dead Last Finish is greater than Did Not Finish which greatly trumps Did Not Start.  DLF>DNF>>DNS.  This motto is now a charm on my RoadID wrist band.

I got lost in the crowd of coaches and they celebrated the last runner as the pregnant lady.  If you saw the live feed, I come across the line after she did.  I didn't care, at that point, I was glad I was done.

Dead.  Last.  FINISHED!

I wound up with very bad blisters on both feet.  So I didn't even attempt
starting the Full Marathon.  With no training and having managed to complete the half, I left it where it was.

I cheered on my friends and everyone else that was in the marathon with the rest of our WiSH running teammates at the Hollywood Studios area.

There is a much longer story to the Marathon Weekend adventure, but I'll write that up another time.

Where am I going from here?

I'm almost back to square one, from when I first started this blog.  I'm back up even heavier than I was last year, topping out at a massive 285 pounds.  I've made some efforts and have lost the first 5 pounds to put me back at my goal.

To loose one hundred pounds...

With that, I'll end it for tonight.  The rest of the story begins tomorrow.

Thanks for Reading!

Full Circle

I've come full circle...
I've actually gone the wrong way around.  I'm right back where I started from, all that time ago.  Albeit I'm still in better shape, but my weight is right back where I was.

Welcome back to 272.

Welcome back to BIG clothing.

What happened at the Marathon?
I didn't make it even as far as I had hoped.  The balloon ladies caught up with me in the Magic Kingdom parking lot.  I went back and forth with them several times before they last passed me going through Adventureland.

I started off that morning feeling pretty excited.  Watching the other corrals take off is quite the experience in itself.  When you're as far back as I was, it can get pretty nerve wracking to wait your turn.

It finally started and, as usual, I had to hit the very first port-a-potty's.  I'm quite convinced that it's just the waiting around and then the excitement of actually starting that sets things in motion.  Once I had made it to the 1st mile marker after the short break, it became quite clear that my ankle was NOT happy with me pounding the asphalt.  No matter what I tried, I couldn't even squeak out 2 minutes of constant running.  So, I swapped my pace around, from Run/Walk 2/1, to Walk/Run 2/1.

By the time that I got to the underpass going towards the Contemporary, I was even having difficulty in keeping that going.  I had managed to run for a few minutes to pass the balloon ladies briefly.

As I finally made it into the Magic Kingdom, I just really don't know what emotions I was having at this point.  It was great to be there, but I knew I was currently in the "last place" position and would be fighting the whole way to keep ahead.

At this point, my bright spot is that... Hey!  I'm in last place.  I should be able to get a GREAT picture coming out of the castle.  Yeah... wrong.  As unbelievable as it is, the 2 gals in front of me... JUMPED IN FRONT OF EACH OF THE PHOTOGRAPHERS coming out of the castle.  I've checked my photos online.  Yep, sure enough... not a damn one of them has just me in the picture.  In each and every freaking one of them these 2 ladies are in them.

I progress into Adventureland and the Balloon Ladies pass me again.  I'm pretty crushed at this point.  My ankle is hurting with every step I take (no, not song from The Police), I'm experiencing a jolt.  With fear that I may have a stress fracture, I make the decision to bail at the medical stop outside of the Magic Kingdom.  I stop by the tent, request an ice pack and a towel.  The also give me some Tylenol.

I entered the med van and wait to leave.  We get the clearance to leave and we make our way out.  2 ladies in the van with me were attempting Dopey.  With no training!!  So I listen a bit to them talking.  The lady directly in front of me is in great pain.  They get out of the van and I hear the med techs say something that it looks like she ruptured her Achilles, because she was unable to move her foot.

Once I make my way out of the van at Epcot, they shove a medal in my hand.  I told them I didn't want it.  They replied that it's mine, take it.  Whatever.  I slowly hobbled my way to the buses.  Thankfully, the Pop Century bus takes right off.

6.2 miles.  That's what I did that morning.

After the Marathon attempt
After I get back to the room and go through the shower, I'm feeling a bit better and decide I've got enough time to go to Epcot and cheer on those still running the race.

I first made my way to the center part were the Christmas tree normally stands, it's the Marathon's last turn towards Space Ship Earth.  I sit down and cheer on people as they come around the corer.  It's extremely hot in this area though.  I'd not eaten anything yet and didn't have anything to drink with me either.  I decided to go to where the runners enter into Epcot at the UK Pavilion.  It was a bit shadier there and I was able to get a Teabreeze (with no alcohol, its the frozen lemonade that I love plus some tea, an Arnold Palmer slushie).

I got to cheer on many people.  I got to see several of our WiSH team mates come through the last stretch.  I even got a full body tackle hug from one them!  The remainder of the trip on Monday, I met up with teammates for breakfast at the Boardwalk Bakery, hobbled around Magic Kingdom and then got on the bust to the airport.

After the DNF and ankle injury in November and the results from the Marathon, I was pretty crushed.  I was at least hoping to make it half way and didn't managed to get even that.

BONUS!
I came off of Marathon weekend to find out that we made a decent year end bonus at work.  I had decided last year that if we did make bonus, I would finally buy a new bike.

The last day of January, a local bike shop had a sale going on on 2013 models.  I wound up with a great deal on a GIANT Defy 5.  They had one left and it was just my size!
GIANT Defy 5
I also picked up a few things for the new bike.  A bottle holder and a helmet.  They weren't going to let me leave without buying one.

I had not ridden a bike since 1996.  I was swiped by a car while riding my bike into work one morning and I hadn't ridden since.

I made an appointment early in February to get it fitted to me.  I also picked up a pair of biking gloves and shorts.

I learned a lot from the fitting!

In late February I picked up a trainer, so I can ride it inside.  I've only ridden it a couple of times, both inside and outside.  We had a couple of days in March where I could ride it outside and I did.

I'm HUGE!
A new injury
A little over two weeks ago, I suffered a pulled groin muscle.  I made a doctors visit and they gave me a prescription for some pain medicine to help me get some sleep.  I was told to call back if by the end of the week my leg wasn't responding, it would mean I would have a very serious tear.

Since I was walking around, they were pretty confident that it wasn't that serious of a pull.

The pain is slowly dying out and I'm getting some of my range of motion back with the exercises and stretches that the doctor told me to do.

What comes next?
With the bonus that I mentioned earlier, I've signed up for more races this year.  I had already signed up for the Indianapolis 500 Mini Marathon that is in May.  Here is a brief schedule:

Indianapolis 500 Mini Marathon
May 2, 2014

With the 18 minute pace minimum, I've decided that with the weight and injury, I'm going to walk this.  I know I can still maintain about a 17 minute walking pace with little effort.

Chicago Rock 'n' Roll 1/2 Marathon
July 20, 2014

Chicago will be my race to fully start serious training.  My new training schedule I've come up with incorporates bike riding as my cross training of choice.  I will be running this with many of my Disney running buddies from WiSH and other groups.

Air Force Marathon  (Yes, MARATHON)
September 20, 2014

I HAVE to get a full marathon under my belt.  Again, I will have Rick as a running buddy.  He was great as a running partner for Cincinnati last year.  He was disappointed that he couldn't be at Disney for my first Marathon, well, he'll still get to be with me on my first marathon!

Indianapolis Monumental 1/2 Marathon
November 1, 2014 (A shot at redemption)

I'm just going to do this because I KNOW I can do this one.  I have to make up for spraining my ankle last year.

This is all in a lead up of hopes of doing the 10th anniversary Goofy for the 2015 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend.  Goofy is 1/2 Marathon on Saturday, Marathon on Sunday!

I just might have one more race for 2014, but I haven't made up my mind about it yet.

Now it's time to say good-bye...
Thanks for reading this long post.  I've needed to get some of that out for a while.  I've got to get my mind going in the right direction again and start making things happen.

See you real soon!

Thanks for Reading!

~Kipp

A weak ankle week.

Ankle injury one week on

I think I have most of my range of motion back in that left ankle now.  The only time I have twinges of any pain are when I go down stairs.

I have a little bit of stiffness when I get up in the morning, but the exercises I do to keep my Flexor Hallucis Longus muscle in shape quickly get that stiffness out.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to give it a trial run on Tuesday.  With new shoes (more on that later) and going on the treadmill-o-doom, I'm hoping that it'll provide enough cushion that the ankle won't give me any troubles.

59 Days until Disney World Check-in

My Disney Experience website had my customization up for my MagicBand for Marathon Weekend.  I've gone with WiSH team colors for this one!  If we get one of these every trip, I might as well take advantage of having different colors.  So my next MagicBand will be Green/Black.

My new MagicBand

If you don't choose, it defaults to grey, which is what color my first one is.

It's the SHOES!

Well, the shoes that I plan on participating in the full marathon with.  If I can run this week, I'm going to start breaking these in ASAP.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 14
Yep... wide width once again only comes in White/Blue.  I picked them up the night before the Monumental Half Marathon and have only really tried them on and walked around in them a tiny bit.  They were MUCH more comfortable feeling than the shape my New Balance shoes are in currently.

The remainder of my borked training schedule

Reality check time.  Obviously this weekend will NOT see me do 17 miles.  The most to this point in my training I've done is 10.5-ish.  I'm thinking that at this late point in the schedule, I'm going to have to forego the fallback weeks and do as slow of a progression as I can leading up to the 20 miler in week 15.

Weighty issue

Yes, once again I'm way up in weight.  The good news is, I'm starting back down again, as my shorts are once again to the point that I need to wear a belt to keep them up.  I went out to lunch more than once this past week.  Once to a supplier chili cook off and the next day was to McAllisters Deli   McAllisters is one of the places that I have a set meal to order, as their website allows you to create a meal and see what it comes out nutrition wise.  I stuck to it, and ordered what I was supposed to.  (1/2 and 1/2 lunch deal, 1/2 New York steamer sandwich and a bowl of Chicken Tortilla Soup).  I also had unsweet Iced Tea.

This week will prove to be much easier on the going out to lunch deal, I don't have money to go out to lunch this week!  LOL!  Lunchbox for me!
