A whole new game!

Today
I started off my morning with a long overdue haircut.  Laura did a fantastic job as usual and I was on my way with a much tidier head of hair.

Next up was to go get the car washed.  My PLAN was to go south from the haircut and grab a donut and unsweet iced tea from Dunkin Donuts on the way.  Well, with an amateur bike race downtown and construction on I-65, it took me a LONG time to get to my morning break!

They were out of double chocolate and they took FOREVER to get around to waiting on me.  I settled for a chocolate frosted cake donut and got my iced tea.  The counter person was sorry that I had to wait so long and gave me a discount.  I got a free donut!

Next up was the car wash.  I made it just in time!  I was only 3 or 4 cars back.  By the time I got up to the front and went in to pay, the line was wrapped around the building!  I go to a local place called Sparkling Image.  They still wipe down your car and do the inside for the same price that the other automatics just send you on through and let you drip dry.  It's $25 well spent for me.  Car is now all sparkly and tidy.

I just went in for socks... I SWEAR!
Since I was close by, I know I had gotten a sale flyer from my local running store (Blue Mile) that is across the street from the car wash.  So, I went on over there to see about some new running socks.

I picked out a pair and the sales lady let me know that if I got 3, I could get one free.  Yeah, at $15 for 2 pair on a brand I've never used before, I'll stick with just the one right now.

She asked if I was training for anything, so I did a brief history and told her I'm repeating what I did for my first half marathon 5 years ago.  I then let her know that my Adrenaline 16's were starting to cause issues with my shins. (ARRRH!  No spellcheck!  I'm NOT trying to spell my name!).

She then asked me when was the last time I had my gait checked.  Well, that was over 5 years ago when I first started training for my first half marathon!

She told me that I should have it checked at least every two years and that it would have been a good idea to especially do it after my sprained ankle.

So, my next adventure begins...

The demon possessed Treadmill-o-death(TM)!
Okay, I THOUGH MY treadmill was bad.  The treadmill they have at the running store is TOUCHY!  It's a fancy "Boston Marathon" edition Nordic Track.  Really beefy looking treadmill with a touch screen built in.

Well, the quick speed choice is a bit different than the Treadmill-o-doom here at home.  I'm used to 1-12, meaning 1-12 MPH.  Theirs, is rather upside-down.  That one is set to Minutes per mile!  I almost did a faceplant!  It sped up FAST!  Then, I tried to just use the + button to start it up to a pace I could deal with.  Well, I wasn't watching the screen and apparently holding my finger on the + wound it up to light speed again!

So, the sales lady then offered to set it up for me and then we stared walking!  WHEW!

They now record you on an iPAD with super slo-mo playback ability.  She was able to run back and forth in the video to watch my gait.

A Problem Found!

Well, after 5 years of tooling around in shoes for over-pronation, it appears that I have been "corrected".  My gait is now almost perfectly neutral!

My left foot still turns ever so slightly, but that could be from the fact that its still not back up to 100% strength from the sprain a few years back!  My right foot still kicks out a bit in the stide, but as far as striking and moving through the gait, it's now perfectly neutral!

So, for those of you that are thinking your newest kix are crap because they are causing you issues, when was the last time you had your gait checked with your local running store??

What does it all mean!??!

Well, it means that I needed a new pair of shoes, stat!  She set me up with a NEW pair of Brooks Ghost 9's!  They just came out "officially" at the beginning of this month!
Would you look at that!  COLORS!  The Ghost line of shoes has won Brooks a lot of awards, so I'm hoping that this iteration will be an excellent shoe.  She let me know that they have a 30-day guarantee, so if I have ANY issues to bring them right back and she will set me up in something else.

After my purchase, she then told me to throw out my Adrenaline 12's that I wore into the store.  They're old and the tread is almost worn through.  She said I wasn't doing myself any favors by using them as walking shoes.

She also told me to come back in October, as I'll probably have run through this pair by then.  She also told me to have my gait rechecked, so they can be doubly sure that I'll have the best suited pair of shoes going into the 1/2 Marathon!

Shopping!

Once back home, I picked up Mom and took her shopping.  She had some birthday money burning a hole in her pocket so we went to Khol's, Bed Bath Bodyworks, 1/2 Price Books (mainly for me, but I didn't find anything.  She did though), Bed Bath & Beyond, and then finally Barns & Noble.

Once we were done with that, I took her out for a quick dinner at Five Guys.

C25K Week 5 Day 3!

I rested for about an hour after getting home before I changed into my running gear.  This time, strapping on the new Ghost 9's!

So far, so good!  I completed Week 5, Day 3 with very few issues.  In fact, I was feeling so good that I was not judging my pace well and had to slow down a few times in the longer running segments.

The new shoes will take a little bit of getting used to, but man... were they cushy!  I think I need to tighten up the left shoe a little bit, as it felt like I was sliding around a bit.

Oh, and I DID get the new socks.  They come 2 pair to a pack at the same price that comparable pairs come in a single pack.

No issues with them tonight, but I'm no where near any long distance runs yet!

Hopefully they'll be alright.  No issues with them and they felt fine tonight.

Counting down!

My counters over to the side tell me I have 63 days until vacation and 179 days until Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend!  I have 4 weeks of Couch to 5K to get through, so I'll wrapping that up soon!

Planning stages.
I'm looking into possibly modifying the Half Marathon training program that I'm using.  The longest run that it has you do is 10 miles.  I remember from 5 years ago that after I past that 10 mile mark, I was just about toast.  It made those last 3 point 1 miles a grueling task!

So, I'm thinking of hybridizing Hal Higdon and Jeff Galloway a bit and morphing it into a fuller routine.

Galloway's program runs for 19 weeks, with 2 weeks being a wind down AFTER the half marathon event.

If I go through C25K and B210K without repeating anything, I can start my half marathon training 4 weeks earlier.  That gives me 16 weeks, versus Galloways 17 weeks to event.

So, I figure if I increase the weekday millage repeats to extend Higdon's plan out to 16 weeks and mix in Galloway's method of long miles on the weekend, I may come out ahead and possibly be able to beat my time from 5 years ago.

Galloway's plan has you go 14 miles 2 weeks BEFORE the 1/2 Marathon Event.  So, in theory, having already gone a longer distance the Half Marathon should be a little bit easier than the last long run in training!  Right?

We shall see!

So, for the week that has put me at 14.72 Miles of activities, with a running total of 25.47 miles since starting on 6/5/16.

I keep swearing that I'm going to get the bike out during the weekends.  I HAVE to get it out next weekend and take it for a ride!

The week ahead - Week 3 of 31
I've started this week off with getting over 11,000 steps in for today.  In the very LEAST, I want to get 10,000 steps a day.  Something to strive for each and every day.

Monday-Wednesday-Friday are my scheduled C25K Days, and big changes come up on the routine for this week.
Brisk five-minute warm-up walk, then do two repetitions of the following:
  • Jog 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
  • Walk 200 yards (or 90 seconds)
  • Jog 400 yards (or 3 minutes)
  • Walk 400 yards (or three minutes)
I will be using the timed method.  So, that 3 Minutes of Jogging, at this point it seems HUGE.  All I can do is tackle it tomorrow and see how it goes.  Week 2 started off rough, but by Friday things were clicking together much better.  I hope that I can minimize repeating weeks.

I just have to remember, at my best, I was up to 8 Minutes of Jogging with 2 minutes of walking.  That was also the summer that we had temps in the 90's for several weeks of my training!  In re-reading my first 1/2 Marathon story, I had totally forgotten that I had jogged at least 4 of the first 6 1/2 Miles!

I know I have it in me!  It's just 3 Minutes, twice!

Other POI's
So, the selection of other jump ropes at Wally World were less than desirable for my tastes.  No, I really don't want a pink sparkly rope or a purple one.  The other ropes were all similar to the cheap plastic one I already picked up.  I may just break down and order the one from Amazon that keeps appearing in my suggested items, now that I've bought Buddy Lee's Jump Rope book!

In the very least, I've been spending 30 seconds to a minute before running kind of mimicking jumping rope and it seems to be helping the shaky ankle.  Yes, the ankle I injured several years ago still gives me fits.   Friday's run I felt much more stable than I have on it in a LONG time.  Today, it hardly bothered me at all!

When I went to put my shoes on to walk Saturday, I noticed that those were the shoes I had been running in all week!  OOopps!  Oh, well.  At least those shoes don't really have that many miles on them, so they're okay to still run in.  I'll have to make sure that my new shoes are put in a more prominent place for me to grab them Tomorrow!

All about the Indy-Mini

How not to do a Half-Marathon
Due to recent and previous injuries, I really had ZERO training for this event. The most I had put in before the race was the 6.2 miles in January and 3 miles last week.

I don't recommend to anyone to ever do a race without any training.  If you do, make sure it's a walker friendly race like the Indy-Mini, as they have a minimum race pace of 18:00 minutes per mile.  Given my corral placement and condition, I was able to finish the race before the time limit expired.

Re-cap of the Indy-Mini
This year was the first year that the Indy-Mini used wave starts.  It seemed to work well, as there was a LOT of people on the course, but never did I encounter a bottleneck.

I started at the back of wave 4 of 5.  Corral V, on corrals that went A-Z.

They were actively checking bibs, not allowing anyone to pass that they didn't view their bib before entering the corral.

Corral Entry
Waiting in my Corral
Photo-bombed Selfie
I crossed the start line and took off with everyone.  I look at my watch (15:30m/m) and know that I'm already in trouble, as I'm starting off WAY to fast for having no training.  My legs let me know this fact very quickly and I immediately slow down.
2014 Indy Mini Course Map
We're off!  Heading to the Start Line!
For the most part, the course is made of up long straight roads, going through some of the poorest sections of the city.  Residents were out cheering for the most part, while others just looked quite annoyed.

The small stretch going north towards the track takes you by Dallara IndyCar Factory and Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing.  Then you head into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, entering under the 1st short straight of the track, heading to the Museum.

Nearing the entry to IMS
YEAH!  Made it to the track!
The IMS Museum
You wind around a bit in the inner track sections before you make it onto the speedway track itself.  It was at this point, by some actual restrooms, that I made a pitstop of my own.

With that business finished, I was out and onto the Indianapolis Motor Speedway!
On the track, approaching the 10K line
Out of Turn 4 and heading to the Start/Finish!
On the main straightaway
Take a look back at the course map and you'll realize that Mile Markers 6, 7, 8 and 9 are all within the IMS area!

It was also at this point that I notice that my phone is almost dead.  At some point, the screen stayed on, thinking I was going to take a video and drained the battery.  So I have very few pictures after this.

Once I was at the track, it was all walking from there on out.

After leaving the track, you wind through a couple of areas heading south of the track.  Once we hit 10th street, it seems like it is an extremely long straight road heading back to downtown!  It probably just seemed that long, since I was just walking at this point.

Once you cross the bridge and head into the Victory Mile, they have lined the streets with checkered flags.  I tried a couple of times to start jogging, but I had nothing left.  I had several people encourage me on, so I must have looked pretty miserable at that point.

Nearing the finish line they are playing loops of many exciting Indy 500 race finishes, which gets you a little pumped up to get to the finish.

I made my way across the finish line and head to the medals area.  Got a bottle of water handed to me, a bag (Finishline, you're brilliant for handing out bags before getting all of those other race finish items!)  I grabbed a banana, a small bag of pretzels, a couple of oatmeal cookies.  I ate one of the cookies right away.  Then I went to the finish photo op and then headed into Military Park for the end of race festivities.

I wasn't feeling festive at all, as I took my own finish medal selfie.

The phone camera lens was all munged up with sweat, so it makes my photo look "soft".

They had several food trucks at the park, but I just wasn't thinking about food at that point.  I had brought a little bit of cash with me just in case, but the smell of food was actually kind of revolting at that point.  I eat the other cookie instead, while I walked over to get my official time.

The walk to the parking garage was awful.  It was the longest 8 blocks to walk in the condition I was in by then.  Then, the parking garage elevators weren't working!  One wasn't working at all, then the other, the 5th floor button wasn't working!  I, of course, was on the 5th floor.  So I went to 4th and slowly made my way up a flight of stairs.

Made a couple of calls on the phone in the car once I hooked it up to the charger.

So that pretty much winds up my race experience!

Indy-Mini race Entertainment
There are loads of entertainment spots throughout the entire course of the Indy-Mini.  The ones that I liked the most were the groups of kids playing rock songs and a drummer line that was mostly made up of kids.  I wish Indy-Mini would post a list of all of the entertainment, because a lot of it was quite enjoyable.

2012 Video of the Indy-Mini
The course has had a SLIGHT change, due to one road having been re-worked from a straight to one that has a curve in it now, so the markers going on the track onward a just a bit off of how it is actually run now.

Would I do this race again?
Yes.

I would like to do this race again someday, when I've actually trained for it.  I would like it to be a much more favorable memory than what I experienced yesterday.

In the last half of the half, I was pretty miserable.  Once we were out of the IMS setting, there wasn't much to keep my mind off of how I was feeling.  At that point I was mainly just trying to keep my legs to continue moving forward.

The Road to Goofy 2015 has officially started!
With this race in the books, this sets things in full motion going forward for the Goofy Challenge in January 2015.

I have four more races before Goofy!  Three of them are more half marathons and one is a full marathon!

The Long, Long road ahead.

My journey there and back...
Just to give a comparison, I have a picture of me in the same shirt 3 years ago and then again today.  Bad haircut 3 years ago and needs a haircut today!

Sad part is, the huge neck and extra chin are back, making most of my shirts uncomfortable.  The huge belly means my shirts no longer tuck in very well either.
May 2011

April 2014
First intervals since the groin pull...
This is kind of how I felt the first times hitting the run interval, for at least 2 out of the 3 miles tonight:

Yeah, it wasn't feeling that great.  Like a big knot or having an extra... *ahem*  Once I got past 2 miles, everything started to feel better.  Now that I'm home and cleaned up, everything is still in it's proper place, so I think I'm good to go.

The last mile I was actually able to get in some longer intervals of actual jogging speeds, without it feeling awkward.

How I think I look out there
The self consciousness of being out there again at this weight is just making me feel uneasy.  I know that I've just got to say I don't care what anyone is thinking, just get out there and get this done... again!

Around the 3:50 mark in the video really is a strong expression of how I was feeling out there today!

Eating
I was much more aware of what I was eating this week.  Was it all good, no.  But I was much better than I have been in months.

I will now be hitting the farmers markets and local butchers to start getting some cleaner foods into me.  Today was the first local farmers market of the year and they didn't have much.  They said Mid to late May is when they will have a good variety of items.  I still bought a pound of ground beef from a local farmer and looked at some lamb patties, thinking that those might make some nice lamb sliders, if I can find the recipe again...

A big difference 3 years ago and now was that I was monitoring my carb intake much more closely.  I know I need to drop most of what I have been eating because my body cannot handle those carbs anymore.

Past time to hit the RESET button...
*BAM!!*

Indy 500 Mini Marathon (1/2 Marathon)
With a week to go for the Indy 500 Mini Marathon, I'm really not sure what to expect out of myself.  Almost zero training and a lot of extra weight.  It's going to be rough.

Oh, I'll be there!  I'll be starting!  Next Friday I'll be at the Mini expo and I know I'll post some pictures up about that on my Facebook account.  I don't remember if KT Tape had a booth at the past Mini Expo's, I think they did.  The Indy Mini is a pretty big race, so I expect they'll have a taping boot there.  I may get my ankle and calf done up again, just for some extra psychological measures (and maybe some physical ones).

The thing I'm most looking forward to is actually being on the track.  Kiss the Bricks!!!

The Long, Long Road Ahead
It's very evident that I've lost a LOT of conditioning these past 6 months.  It's nowhere near as bad as when I started 3 years ago, but it sure feels like it sometimes!

I'm signed up for races throughout the year, all leading up for next years Goofy race and a Half challenge at Disney world.

I have plans, I just need to stick to them and STOP EATING all the junk I have been.  Also to eat much less than I have been too!

I have a couple of months left to pay off my car, so once that monthly expense is released I'm going to sign up at a local gym too.  I want to have a full Running/Riding/Strength training program in place before I go to my full marathon in September!

Reality

Two Weeks

Here we are, about 2 weeks out from the Disney World Marathon.  I'll be at Walt Disney World in 11 days.  I'm excited to be going down.

Other than that, I'm not so excited to be running.

Zero Training

Tomorrow I shall see if I'm finally close to 100% on the ankle.  I'll be lacing up the new Brooks and hitting the treadmill to see how long I can go.

The previous attempts at hitting the treadmill have ended up with the ankle being sore for several days afterwards.

I have been able to do the exercises the doctor told me to do for about a week without any twinges of pain.  The only activity that gives me any problems these days are the stairs at work.  Since this past week and next week will be broken up with a day off at work, I'm feeling much more solid going up and down the stairs.

We shall see how it translates on the Treadmill-o-doom tomorrow.

Adjustments

I'm going to try a new pacing strategy tomorrow also.  I'm shortening the run/walk timing.  I'm going to try 2/1 and see how that feels.

I actually have the Treadmill-o-doom working a bit better now, so I'm now again able to adjust the incline.

The Treadmill-o-doom is an early iFit model.  It has an input jack for a 'CD Player'.  You could purchase Music/Training CD's that would adjust the Speed and incline of the treadmill automatically.

Well, I never got any of those discs way-back-when.  What I DID find, was there's an APP for that!  It's an iOS app that you can set up a routine and it will operate the treadmill!  I have the app setup on my old iPhone 3 (minus sim card, it's basically an over glorified iPod touch?) and have played around with it some.

The App is a bit rough inputting a routine.  It's very tedious.  So if it's a very long routine you want to do, you have a lot of setup to do.  Still, it's made the Treadmill-o-doom just a tad better to live with.

Weight

Inactivity has not done me any good.  I'm up in weight again, the highest I've been since I began my journey.  268.  When I started my journey, I officially weighed in on my first blog at 275.  *sigh*  Best I can describe it now is that I've been in a funk ever since I sprained my ankle at the beginning of November.

Expectations

So, reality has to set in here.  To be realistic, I'm not going to finish the Marathon.  ( I can hear Rick yelling in the background... "NOOOO, you can do it!!")

My goal is to see how well I can do to the half way point.  I KNOW i can do a half marathon with little training.  I've been there, Done that.

A full marathon though...  I know that half marathon I was dusted by the end of it.

So here it is.

I WILL get half way.  13.1 miles.  I think that is like...  Animal Kingdom Parking lot.

I'd LOVE to get to the Sports Complex, 20-ish miles.

It'll take all of Tink's Pixie Dust to get me to the finish line at 26.2 miles.

Everything past 13.1 miles, I'll take it.  Whatever it ends up being.

Tracking Zombie Kipp

If you really must, here is the link to track me:

http://live.xacte.com/wdw/alerts/

Be mindful, the race is Sunday, January 12th.  The start time is EARLY!  5:30-ish in the morning.  There are more corrals this year, so I may not even be crossing the start line until 6:15 or later!!  Corrals run A through P.  I'm in O.  As in; Oh My!  It's a long way to the start line!

If you have created an account from tracking me or other runners, log in and then look for me!

First Name: Kipp
Last Name: Shinabarger

I should show up as:  KIPP SHINABARGER 45 / M INDIANAPOLIS, IN Marathon

It should also show up on my Facebook timeline.

Looking ahead

2014 Goal - Run 1000 Miles in 2014.
2014 Goal - Loose weight.  No specific goal yet.  Just loose some damn weight.

2014 Races I will be in or expect to be in:

2014 Walt Disney World Marathon (we've already discussed this...)
2014 Indy 500 Mini Marathon - 1/2 Marathon on May 3rd, 2014.  (REGISTERED)
2014 Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon on July 20th, 2014. (Need to Register)
.

.
2015 Walt Disney World Goofy Race and a Half Challenge, January 2015.

Some races I'm interested in:

Kentucky Derby Half Marathon.  It's April 19th, and I just don't think I'll be able to make it in 2014.

Marine Corp Marathon - sometime in the future.  Too many friends tell me that this is one to not miss out on. Marine Corp Historic Half (May... cuts into IndyCar time...  Not this year).

Air Force Half Marathon, this one isn't too far away and sounds interesting.  You get to run around Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.  September 20th, so this could be doable. Cheapest registration is January 1st.  We'll see :)

Disneyland 1/2, so I can also get a Coast-to-Coast medal.  Some day.  This has to take place within the same year.  So maybe something to start thinking about for 2015?

A weak ankle week.

Ankle injury one week on

I think I have most of my range of motion back in that left ankle now.  The only time I have twinges of any pain are when I go down stairs.

I have a little bit of stiffness when I get up in the morning, but the exercises I do to keep my Flexor Hallucis Longus muscle in shape quickly get that stiffness out.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to give it a trial run on Tuesday.  With new shoes (more on that later) and going on the treadmill-o-doom, I'm hoping that it'll provide enough cushion that the ankle won't give me any troubles.

59 Days until Disney World Check-in

My Disney Experience website had my customization up for my MagicBand for Marathon Weekend.  I've gone with WiSH team colors for this one!  If we get one of these every trip, I might as well take advantage of having different colors.  So my next MagicBand will be Green/Black.

My new MagicBand

If you don't choose, it defaults to grey, which is what color my first one is.

It's the SHOES!

Well, the shoes that I plan on participating in the full marathon with.  If I can run this week, I'm going to start breaking these in ASAP.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 14
Yep... wide width once again only comes in White/Blue.  I picked them up the night before the Monumental Half Marathon and have only really tried them on and walked around in them a tiny bit.  They were MUCH more comfortable feeling than the shape my New Balance shoes are in currently.

The remainder of my borked training schedule

Reality check time.  Obviously this weekend will NOT see me do 17 miles.  The most to this point in my training I've done is 10.5-ish.  I'm thinking that at this late point in the schedule, I'm going to have to forego the fallback weeks and do as slow of a progression as I can leading up to the 20 miler in week 15.

Weighty issue

Yes, once again I'm way up in weight.  The good news is, I'm starting back down again, as my shorts are once again to the point that I need to wear a belt to keep them up.  I went out to lunch more than once this past week.  Once to a supplier chili cook off and the next day was to McAllisters Deli   McAllisters is one of the places that I have a set meal to order, as their website allows you to create a meal and see what it comes out nutrition wise.  I stuck to it, and ordered what I was supposed to.  (1/2 and 1/2 lunch deal, 1/2 New York steamer sandwich and a bowl of Chicken Tortilla Soup).  I also had unsweet Iced Tea.

This week will prove to be much easier on the going out to lunch deal, I don't have money to go out to lunch this week!  LOL!  Lunchbox for me!
