The shameful neglected Blog Post

Quick update

I've once again grossly neglected to update my blog.  Although, by looking at many other friends blogs, I'm not the only one.

Here we are, Christmas Break!  I'm taking some of my extra time off of work to tackle some things.  I've posted a lot of new pictures from my Disney World trip after Thanksgiving over on my Facebook page.

I've also started changing the look of my blog!  Since I've neglected it for so long, I figure I might as well add some new chrome to the bumper, so to speak. :)

I've got a long run to put in this weekend, well, today sometime :)  I didn't sleep well last night (about 3 hours or so), so my motivation to run just isn't there right now.  Maybe I'll get a nap in and see if that'll add to my energy!

My updated counter on the side is showing that it's about 18 days till the Walt Disney World 1/2 Marathon!!  I'm keeping an eye on the extended weather forecast @ Accuweather

Thanks for Reading!  Regards,

Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon

Friday
I met up with Rick at the Monumental Marathon Expo at the Indianapolis Convention Center around 2pm. He was listening to Dane Rauschenberg when I arrived. After hearing the last of his talk really made me wish I had made it in earlier.

I then picked up my packet, which was even more disappointing that the packet we got at Disney World in January. Apparently all the freebies are gone now. Just basically getting a race shirt and your bib.

Rick and I then wandered around the sparse exhibitors at the expo... we're thinking the major exhibitors may have been tied up at some place called New York. I did not have a cap or hat that would protect my ears, so the only purchase I made was for a knit cap. The one I got was only because it said "In Training for the Zombie Apocalypse"

We decided to think about what we were going to have to eat. We both took a look at the smartphones. We finally wound up at Noodles and Co. It was my first time at one of these and I wound up with a "small" Spaghetti and meatballs. I was amazed that what I got was "small", I cannot imagine eating the regular portion! It was good and I'd probably eat there again in the future.
After spending a couple of hours there chatting along, we finally headed to my place on the southeast side.

We spent some time getting our stuff ready for in the morning and reading about the NYC Marathon debacle.
Saturday - Race Day
We were up and getting ready around 5:30 and the weather report was looking even more disappointing that it did the night before. The rain was moving in quicker than they predicted, it looked like we may be getting wet towards the end of the race.

We were downtown in plenty of time. Rick met up with some of the Half Fanatic/Marathon Maniacs that were in for the race and I was able to meet some of them. I helped a bit with some group photos.

Then Rick and I got into line for the port-a-pottys. This was a disappointment. In my opinion, they did not have enough of them. Of course, later, we see that if we had gotten to the corral area, there were more down the street. It took us a while to get that business finished.

It was then getting very close to the start time. The announcement system was not working very well at all. There were also no signs letting people know where to walk to get into the corral. We just followed a group into the area and then tried to salmon run through the people to get back to where we were supposed to be. We then see that there were a few entrances to the corral area and we could have walked the much less crowded sidewalk to the area we were to be in.

Since the PA system wasn't working well at all, we just see the group of people surge forward a bit and then it began a steady movement forward. After experiencing a Disney race... timed wave starts are a much better approach!

We crossed the start line timing mats and we were off! I had estimated that I would be able to keep up with a 4/1 method and it held true for the most part at the beginning. One problem I encounterd very quickly was that the cold air was very irritating to me. It would be just around the 4 minute mark when I'd start coughing and loosing my breath. We were keeping a very good pace for the first several miles.

Since the longest run I had done since my break was 4 miles, after we passed the 4 mile mark I was starting to feel it. Going into the miles after that, we picked up a police cruiser behind us that was telling everyone with us that we were 2 minutes off the pace! What!!!??? Rick and I both checked our watches and we were still in good range of the minimum pace!

We continued on, attempting to put some distance between us and the cruiser, but I was REALLY beginning to feel the miles at this point. It would also be around the 6-7 mile point that we first were pelted with our first bout of sleet. Rick then noticed the signs they had posted about the race course... they had put in a time that the roads were to be closed was from 8 till 10:30! They hadn't taken into consideration that the back of the packers wouldn't start across the start line until at least 10 minutes after the "start" and that the minimum pace requirements would put those people in that area AFTER the 10:30 time...

I was then just focused on getting to the 10 mile mark. I knew at that point, I'd not be in any risk of getting swept, as at that point is when the full marathon course joined back up with the half and our pace wouldn't matter. I knew if I got to 10, I'd at least be able to finish!

Between 8 and 10 miles Rick was offering up a lot of encouragement. My legs were fading fast and I was quickly running out of energy.

We made it to 10 miles much to my relief! It was also at this point that I hit the wall. Then the wall fell on me. We had to stop several times for me to try and stretch my calves out some, I could feel the cold seep up my legs and my calves were tightening up very badly.

Rick was laying the encouragement on constantly from that point on for me. It helped keep me going. If it hadn't been for him I'd have given up if I had been solo. The full marathoners that were passing us up were also offering up encouragement. I just knew that I just had to keep moving.

As we passed the parking garage that we parked at, I knew we were then VERY close to the finish line. There were a lot more spectators at this point and they were cheering everyone one in the dreary weather we were having at that point (it had begun to sleet on us once again). We made the final turn and Rick ran ahead so he could video me coming across the finish mats. I mustered up as much as I could to at least try and jog across the finish line. At this point, I'm not really sure that I did or not... I just know that I was ready to drop once I crossed that line.

We got our medals, a mylar and Rick got us waters. I picked up an apple and a cookie. I started in on the apple and it tasted like it was the best apple EVER!

Official time: 3:37:29. Previous Half Marathon time: 3:48:49

That's an improvement of 11 minutes, with having lost almost half of my training period to an injury!

Saturday - Post Race
Rick quickly saw that they were giving free massages and asked if I thought I'd do that. It was only a 20 minute wait and I said sure. We found a spot out of the rain/sleet and sat down to wait. I managed to get the cookie out of the wrapper and I also started in on the water. I had finished both and then made calls to Mom and then my Dad to let them know we had finished and that everything was okay. Very cold, but okay.

It was then time for me to hobble over to the massage tent. The gal asked me where it hurt and I told her my calves needed help. She knew at first touch how bad of shape I was in, because all she did was touch my left calf and I flinched. She worked for 5 minutes on each leg. I was beginning to relax. I may or may not have asked her to marry me in my delirium. Once my 10 minutes were up, she TOLD me to make sure I did calf stretches throughout the rest of the day and evening.

I exited the tent and made it over to where Rick was waiting and then the cold hit me. I was FREEZING all of the sudden. To the point that I was shivering and shaking. Rick made it back over in the rain to the mylar blanket area and picked up another one for me so we could wrap it over my lower half.

We then started thinking about going to the convention center to get warm and get some food. I was thinking it was either walk a couple blocks to the convention center or walk a couple blocks the other way back to the car.

We decided on the car and head back to my place to get some warm showers and cleaned up to go out to eat.
It ended up taking a lot longer to get back home, because I wasn't thinking very clearly and could only think that we had to cross the marathon route to get back. If I would have realize sooner that we could have gone the other way and picked up the interstate back to my place we would have been back in a very short time. Oh well. We made it back and got cleaned up. We donned our race shirts and went out to one of my Indy hometown favorites, Scotty's Brewhouse. They've opened up a new one on the southeast side near where I live and we headed there for Lunch/Dinner... (Linner?)

My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach. I got a southwest burger, potato wedges and some mac & cheese. I finished all of the burger, but left some wedges and mac & cheese. We chatted for a bit more and then took off from there. We were very near the interstate for Rick to head back up to the Chicagoland area, so we parted there. Rick will be visiting me again in December for another race, but I'll be cheering, not a participant in that race.

I decided that I felt good enough after eating that huge meal that I'd go out and see Wreck-it Ralph. I pulled up Fandango on my phone and purchased my ticket. I LOVED the short before the movie, Paperman. The movie was pretty good too.

That pretty much wrapped up Saturday for me!

4 weeks of ouch!

Achilles....
9/16/12 - Last long run I've done, 8.11 miles.  The course I took was VERY hilly.  Add this to my normal runs outside were always going over the overpass for the most part.  I ended up aggravating my Achilles on my left foot.

9/26/12 - First try at running and I got onto the treadmill-o-doom.  It seemed to go well after my run.  Then, the next morning I was right back where I was before.

After that I found a bunch of hints online on what I had done and best ways to go about "curing" it.  It of course means to not be running for a while.  With exercises, stretching and some massaging of the area, I now seem to be much better.

10/9/12 - I did some work on the treadmill-o-doom.  Just a mile to see how things would go.  3/4 mile walking and 1/4 mile at a very light jog.  It went well.  1/4 Mile of the walk was done barefoot.

Tonight, tonight, tonight
Monumental 1/2 Marathon is quickly approaching! (20 Days and counting!) So tonight I buckled down and hit the treadmill-o-doom again.  This time going for 2 miles total, but at at least some kind of "race pace".  I had one of my favorite Podrunner podcasts (Speedbump #1) going and I took off.  Warm up walk for a few minutes and then into an 8 minute segment at 160 BPM.  That felt very good and I really felt that I could keep the 160 BPM pace up for a very long time.  Breathing was good and everything just seemed to be working together.  Couple minute slowdown to 150 BPM walking and then up to 165 BPM.  At about 6 minutes into that 8 minute segment, I began to get very winded and my pulse went up.  I ended up dialing it back for a minute and taking a few sips of water.  I then finished out the segment and began a cool down routine, as I was getting near the 1-3/4 mile mark.  For the last 1/4 mile, I once again did it walking barefoot.

Weight
Dad is pretty much beating the socks off of me right now in the weight loss area.  This past week he remained steady, but for the 3 previous weeks he was steadily loosing.  Since I've not been running, I foolishly didn't cut back my calorie intake.  I paid for it in weight.  I'm back up, but at least last week I managed to loose 1.  Currently back at 246.  I feel like I'm NEVER going to get into the 230's!!  I'm also nowhere near the 220 I was hoping for by the Monumental 1/2... :(  With the setback from the Achilles, I'm just looking to finish the Monumental 1/2 and then work at getting better for the Disney World 5K and 1/2 Marathon in January!

I once again put off running from Saturday to Sunday.  I was just feeling SUPER run down Saturday and decided to just really do nothing.  Sunday, however, I spent a couple hours mowing the lawn, then went grocery shopping and topped the afternoon off by trying my 7 mile run!  WHEW!  My internal systems didn't like that and I had some gastro problems after I hit my halfway point around 3.5 miles.  It made the return trip of 3.5 miles very miserable and slow going.

Tonight's 3 mile run could have been better, my legs were very tight from sitting in a training class all day today and I'm pretty sure I was still a bit sore from Sundays 7 mile attempt.

Last year at this time, we were driving back from Florida on the 10th & 11th.  I continued my Bridge 2 10K program for that week on the 13th and 15th.  My 1/2 Marathon training for the 2012 Disney World 1/2 isn't scheduled to begin until October I think.  This year I have an additional 1/2 Marathon that is in November, so my 1/2 Training started earlier than I did last year.

A decent week for me

Week Date Kipp Weekly% Overall% Dad Weekly% Overall%

14 9/11/2012 244 2 0.81% 2.01% 223 -1 -0.45% 3.04%

Well, no pizza over the weekend and I put in a 2 pound loss!  I'm pretty sure the 7 mile run attempt also played into this.  It's a start back in the right direction, I just have to make SURE that I continue to loose instead of bouncing around the same weight that I have been for the past year.

We are getting closer and closer to the end of this years contest!  Neither Dad or I have made much headway, but hopefully we've both put it behind us and are going to continue in the right direction for the remaining weeks ahead.

Countdown!

53 Days until the Indy Monumental Half!
72 Days until my Florida & Disney World Vacation!
121 Days until my Disney World Marathon Weekend Trip!
Side note on Disney World Marathon weekend:
Full Marathon: SOLD OUT! (20th Anniversary)

The Week Ahead

S-12 9/2 9/3 9/4 9/5 9/6 9/7 9/8
4 Cross Rest 3 M Run 4 M PACE 3 M Run Rest 7 M Run

This upcoming week is another pace week.  If it's as warm and humid as it was tonight, I'll have trouble with that 4 mile pace run tomorrow!  Then I've got a whopping 7 mile run slated for my long slow run Saturday.  The bonus is, if the weatherman is correct, the highs will be in the lows 70's this weekend.

The PodRunner podcasts/interval routines have been helping a lot lately.  Right now I'm working out with one called Staircase of the Gods.  The following is the BPM (beats per minute) chart for this mix:
BPM CHART
3 minutes @ 150 BPM
8 minutes @ 160 BPM
3 minutes @ 150 BPM
8 minutes @ 165 BPM
3 minutes @ 150 BPM
8 minutes @ 170 BPM
3 minutes @ 150 BPM
It's really helping me focus on staying running instead of slowing down whenever I feel like it.  I keep telling myself that the slowdown segment will be any minute now.  The weather tonight really didn't help, but I was still able to keep a better walking pace than I normally would without the pace music.  With my 3 mile runs lasting about an hour, I cycle through this mix once and into the next couple of segments on the 2nd listen.

A look back at Last Year

I've been reviewing where I was with running a year ago.  Last year, I had not begun my 1/2  Marathon Training yet, and I was still winding down with the Bridge to 10K program.  The 3rd and the 6th were runs I did while at Disney World last year!  In fact, I'd say that the run I had tonight was comparable to the humidity I experienced down there that week.  It was rough, but a very scenic run (in more ways than one, I'm telling you!)

This week we have a KO!

Week Date Kipp Weekly% Overall% Dad Weekly% Overall%

Dad is taking me to the shed now!  Wow!  He's begun his modified Atkins diet in earnest again!  It appears to be working very well for him so far.  He's warned me that he's aiming for another 5 pounds for next week too!  So far, I've noticed a trend in the past few weeks that if I have pizza over the weekend, I gain.  The weekends I don't, I loose.  So it's obviously a carb issue with me too.  I need to start really focusing on what I'm eating again.  I've been able to hold steady around the same weight for a year now, now I really need to kick it and start loosing again.

The final countdown

60 Days till the Indy Monumental Half, about 80 days till I'm down in Disney World for some vacation time with Dad and 128 Days until Marathon Weekend 2013!  It's going to be here before I know it!

Week 3 of training listed above.  Tonight was supposed to be a Cross Training night, but I did my long, slow run that I was supposed to do yesterday.  :)  It was warm tonight, but it was the humidity that really got to me.  So regardless of what run it was going to be, it was going to be a long slow run anyways!

A little product review: Tifosi Tyrant - Gloss Black
I ordered some printer supplies from Newegg and for each item I recieved a $5 gift "card".  It was actually just a discount code they sent to me via e-mail, but it still came in handy.  I was originally looking at the Race Red or Race Orange versions of these, but the Gloss Black model I've nabbed a picture of above were 33% cheaper than the other colors.  Then I knocked more off with the discount codes.

I've run with them for almost a week now, and boy is it nice not having to worry about the cheap sunglasses I was using bouncing and sliding around any more.  These are much more sung to the face that I'm used to, but by the time I had been running for 10 minutes, I didn't notice them at all.

It came with 3 pairs of lenses; clear, Smoke Red and All Condition Red.  The smoke red are the mirrored version that are in the picture above.  The All Condition red are sort of a rose tinted lens.  Finally the clear are just that, clear.

With it getting darker now during my run in the evening, I'll be switching to the AC Red this week and have to get my butt out of bed on Saturday mornings for my LSR (Long Slow Run) so I can run during the daylight hours.

The BLOGGER online editor...

It appears that they've finally "fixed" the online editor so tables aren't totally whacked out by it.  So I should be a bit more calm and start posting a bit more regularly.  :)

BLOGGER's online editor has turned to trash.

****BEGIN RANT****

Whatever changes they've made recently to the backend of the online editor for blogger has made it into a total trash heap of an editor.

Not that the online editor was in anyway, shape or form a decent editor to begin with, but I pretty much had it doing exactly what I wanted it to do.

I can no longer paste my Excel table into the editor and even have it remotely come out looking right.  When I examine the source HTML in the online editor, I can see where it is modifying in the table structure and it's just trashing it, placing the end tag for the table in the wrong spot.

So then my post looks like trash when I try to edit it and make it look how I've been doing it for months.

I just tried an offline editor, Microsoft Live Writer, and when I post from the offline editor, the back end of BLOGGER does the same thing, it trashes the table.

****END RANT****

So, just for now, I've delayed posting this weeks contest results... as I'm just too fed up jerking around with this online editor to finish the post tonight.

Dad gained and I somehow maintained.  I was at a family reunion last Saturday and managed to maintain is wonder for me.  Normally I feel like I gain five pounds during a family reunion outing!  Dad will be traveling beginning Friday and will be out of town all next week, so his thoughts are that he’ll gain again.

If this post looks strange…

I’m absolutely furious with the online Blogger editor, as it is now not wanting to accept pasted tables very well any more.  It’ keeps re-formatting them into pretty much gibberish when you switch from the WYSISWYG editor and the HTML editor.  So, my pasted table from Excel above probably looks like trash, but that's the best I can get it now because of whatever changes they've made recently to the Blogger online editor...

It’s Official!

I’ve booked flights for the trip down and back for Marathon Weekend.  I’m flying out Wednesday before and heading back Monday evening after the weekend.  This will be my first trip that I have “split” my ticket.  I’m going down on Southwest and coming back on Airtran.  I know that they’re now the same company, but Southwest has no bag fees, but Airtran does… go figure.  Southwest hasn’t expanded their flights in and out of Indianapolis by much as of yet, but I figure it’ll just be a matter of time before that changes eventually.

I ONLY went 3.5 miles...

A little perspective.

"I ONLY went 3.5 miles tonight."

Yes, that actually went through my mind as I got back home tonight after my run.

Taking a look back at my blog from this time a year ago, I was just managing to get up into the 2 mile range while finishing out the month by getting up to 3.5 miles.  And those runs were struggles each and every time.

I look back at those pace times and I now realize that I can easily WALK that pace now.  My overall running pace might not be much faster, but it's also been in the high 90's regularly around here, forcing the need to keep it to a slower pace.

I look back at Saturday's run where I put in almost 6.75 miles and chalk it up to the fact that I "Just went further than I had intended to".  Amazing.

I am upset that I've not been able to shed the pounds that I'd like to recently, but as far as fitness goes, I think I'm doing very well!

Work has been rough the past month or so, so just sitting back to this realization tonight just makes me kinda laugh a little.

I just needed a little bit of perspective.

Blog Post 100-A look at my upcoming training plans!

ALREADY!

August is here!!  My full fledged 1/2 Marathon training will start in a couple of weeks!  This will be lengthy, but here is my proposed training plan.  It's based off of Hal Higdon's Novice 2 plan.  I've modified it due to the 2 Half Marathons that I'm going to be training for.  Some of these distances are actually shorter than what I'm doing regularly now, but the important part is that I'm going to be training for a faster finish time.  The important runs are going to be the Runs marked PACE.  This year will also be different due to the fact that as the temperature drops outside, I'll still be training outside for the most part.  The Monumental Half is here in Indy at the beginning of November!  BRRR!

Marathon!

After the Monumental, I imagine that more and more of my training will once again return to the Treadmill-o-doom, depending on what kind of winter we wind up with here in Indy.

Yes, there is a possible 3rd 1/2 Marathon in that training schedule, the Space Coast 1/2 Marathon.  I'm seriously thinking about attempting this, but I also don't want to possibly injure myself going into the Walt Disney World 1/2.  I think if I do enter it, I won't go into it looking for any type of good timing.  I'd just want to do it to do it.  With today's walk, I now know that I can keep a good walking pace that would keep me ahead of the sweepers.  IF I decide to do this race, I'll of course have to make a few tweaks to this plan.

Once I put this together, I then realized that this is almost a half a years worth of training!  Twenty-two weeks from beginning till the end at WDW 1/2 in January!
