Week 10 Report!

Well, Dad isn't at home, so we're taking his number from the end of last week, before he headed up to Orlando.

Week Date Kipp Loss Weekly% Overall% Dad Loss Weekly% Overall%
10 5/31/2011 257 3 1.15% 6.55% 216 1 0.46% 4.85%

Once again, I'm rather surprised by my number for this week.  The saving grace is that over the holiday weekend, we had cheeseburgers and hot dogs, but they were singular in quantity.  A cheeseburger, beans & Potato salad, all with listed SINGLE portion sizes.  Sticking to this has helped tremendously.  I'm horrible with portion control.

If I can continue on this pace, I'll be ready to send off another $25 to Give Kids the World soon!

As far as hitting the treadmill tonight, I totally lost track of time on something I was working on, and almost forgot to call Dad!  So, I'll be back on it tomorrow and hopefully it'll work. If not, I may try Day 1 again, only doing it outside!

On a disappointing note, I dropped my Camelbak bottle today at work, and busted the flip tab off.  :-(  I'm looking to see what it'll cost to buy a new top for it.  If it's too bad, I'll just get a new bottle.  Somehow in the move, I've lost my stainless insulated Camelbak that I had.  Lost, or it's still somehow packed in one of the few remaining boxes I have left!  I'm thinking that it may have been a left behind casualty.

Little case of Lazy Ass - Week 6 Day 1 round 2

Yes, you're reading that correctly.  I'm starting Week 6 over again, due to my having a little bit of lazy ass syndrome over the weekend.  But first I want to give a few shout outs:

To all those that have served and are currently serving our country by being in any branch of the Military,
Thank YOU!

Then next is to a friend that ran in a 5K over the weekend.  I'll call him Mr. Hears A Who:

Congratulations!

With a chip time of 31:04.2! He's booking along at a much better pace that I'm currently doing!  I think I may have a couple of pounds on him though.

So, back on to the subject of my being lazy this past weekend.  Thursday would have been my normal night for Day 3 on the weekly schedule.  I came home that evening and was totally exhausted.  We had some rough weather last week here in Indy and that led to me having a couple of near sleepless nights.  I wound up falling asleep on the couch after dinner Thursday.  Friday night is Mom & my Subway night.  I figured that I'd just wait till Saturday.

Saturday comes and during the morning I don't feel like doing much.  We end up going to do our grocery shopping a bit later than usual.  After we get back and have dinner, I decide that I'm finally going to go see Thor at the movies.  Another day shot.

Sunday!  Indy 500 time!  First time experiencing the local coverage of the Indy 500 on TV.  All four major local networks had stuff going on, so I spent most of the morning flipping channels watching stuff leading up to the 500.  Then...  I find out that since we're now in Indy, the race is delayed!  No live coverage on TV!  ARRRRRGH!  So we listen to the race on the radio (I hadn't done that since the 1970's!!).  Then we end up watching it all on the delay starting at 7pm with "pre-race" and then 8pm for the race start.
So that leaves today!!  I get all my running gear on (yes, I now have "running gear").  Get on the treadmill... and nothing.  Treadmill no-go.  No-va.  ARRRRRRGH!  I open it up to check one of the sensors that is prone to be mis-aligned.  Everything there seems to be okay.  Put it all back together.  I can get it going in fit's & starts & stops, so I struggle along.  By the end of the workout, it seems to be working normally again.  I'll find out tomorrow night if it is...

Starting next week, I'll just post the chart from Week 10-19.  Week 24 will be our goal week, as that will be the Walt Disney World Trip time!

I was surprised to see myself with a loss this week.  I thought for sure that going off the diet reservation last Saturday was going to doom me this week.  I'll take it :)

I'm not doing Week 6 Day 2 of C25K tonight.  I've got a blistering headache and I've read that it's not a good idea to mix Ibuprofen & running.  They normally talk about long distance, but as lousy as I feel right now I don't think bouncing around doing a run will really do me much good.  Anyhow, I'll do it tomorrow.

I'm not expecting anything fantastic on the weight this week.  I went to see Pirates 4 last night and I may or may not have had an entire package of Twizzlers while watching the movie.

NEW!

Mom and I also went to the local outlet mall yesterday morning/afternoon.  I managed to snag a couple pairs of running shorts.  One pair from the Under Armor store for $9.00 clearance, another pair from the Nike Store, $15 clearance on some Livestrong running shorts.  Tonight was the first run in them and it definitely is a different experience.  Much more comfortable wearing the synthetics than cotton.  I just need 1 more pair of shorts to finish my running set.  Of course, when I go on to the other training schedules for the 1/2 marathon, there are more running days than the 3 days a week on the 5K & 10K.  We also had lunch at Max & Ermas, which also contributes to my doubts on the weight loss this week.

I have to keep the outlet mall in mind, as when I go to the 1/2 marathon, I need to pick up some throwaway warm items.  You have to do a lot of standing around early in the morning in January in Florida, which sometimes can be quite chilly.  So they recommend that you have some throw away items to help keep you warm at the beginning of the race.  Items tossed along the route will be picked up and given to charities.  Kinda cool, but not exactly something I'm going to throw away a $50 Disney sweat shirt on!

At least the big news for me tonight is that I did Week 5 Day 2 without any issues.  No slow downs, no shin or calf pain.

I tried something new tonight.  I covered up the timer on the treadmill.  MUCH BETTER!  As much as I tried to not look at it before, I was always watching it dreading how much more time I had yet to run in the segment.

Tonight, with covering up the timer, I just kept running and listened to the music on my iPhone as the C25K app kept me going along.  I added a few more songs to my songs list tonight and that also helped change things up a bit.  Overall, the 8 minute segments really didn't SEEM all that long since I wasn't able to keep track of it!

Now on to the dreaded Week 5 Day 3.  It's the 20 minute solid run.  Warm up 5, Run 20, Cool down 5.  I plan on doing the same thing with the timer.  I hope doing that little trick will help me concentrate on just running along and the 20 minutes will just fly by listening to some tunes.

I've been looking for a countdown wigit/gadget/doodad/thing-a-ma-jig  to add to my little blog here, but haven't found anything that really looks like it will do what I'd like.  So I now bring you...

SHAZAM! Week 5 Day 1 of C25K!

Yes!  I'm now on the "dreaded" week 5 of Couch to 5K.

Week 5 Day 1 Week 5 Day 2 Week 5 Day 3
5 Minute Warm Up 5 Minute Warm Up 5 Minute Warm Up
5 Minute Jog 8 Minute Jog 20 Minute Jog
3 Minute Walk 5 Minute Walk 5 Minute Cool Down
5 Minute Jog 8 Minute Jog
3 Minute Walk 5 Minute Cool Down
5 Minute Jog
5 Minute Cool Down

Today was of course Week 5 Day 1 and to be honest, it went well.  I was able to handle each of the 5 minute jog segments without slowing down.  Having repeated week 4 twice I think was a wise choice heading into this tough week.

This is where things start shaping up as we get closer to being "ready" for a 5K race.  I'm hoping that getting through this week will require my repeating weeks less often.  My target date to start training for the Half Marathon will be in the September/October area.  So I've got C25K to finish up and go through the B210K (Bridge to 10K) this summer.

I see now that each program is designed to double your distance each time.  5K (3 mile neighborhood) - 10K (6ish miles) - Half Marathon (13.1 Miles).  Yes, I know it progresses onward from there, but let's not get drunk on the cool-aid, m'kay?

Small town where my Mom grew up is having a 5K run during the period that I think our reunion will be.  It still hasn't been decided on WHERE it's going to be.  So until I hear anything, I'm putting off committing myself to enter that race at the end of July.

We'll see how it goes.  If that plan falls through, I'm sure I'll find something else to enter into over this summer.

Well, this week was a surprise for me!  I figured with going out for dinner Saturday night was going to put me at another zero week, or worse, a gain.  I'll take this though!

I've thrown my schedule off a bit for this week.  Today (Tuesday) is normally a C25K day, but I'm putting it off till tomorrow.  Got home late from work and ate dinner late.  I learned Sunday night not to run too soon after eating.  I almost had what they call at Disney, a protein spill.  It was in the last 5 minute stint in the week 4 cycle that I almost had a reversal of dinner.  So knowing tonight I'd run out of time, I decided not to risk the spillage and just go for it tomorrow.

So, after the late dinner, I called Dad for our weekly chat.  Found out I was lucky on the scale and Dad wasn't so lucky.

The other thing that it means this week is...  I'm over my first 10 pounds lost!  I'll be setting up a payment to Give Kids the World to go out when I get my next paycheck.  $25.00.  Next target weight for donation will be at the 255 pound mark.

This week, we have a TIE!

Almost to my first 10 pounds lost!  I'll be saving back $25 from this weeks check to go to Give Kids the World next week!

Tonight was also Week 4 Day 2 of C25K.  I ran all but about 30 seconds of the last 5 minute segment.  I think I know what was up today.  Sunday I had almost NO caffeine.  Today I've had quite a bit (Curse you Diet Dr. Pepper!!).  I now know that the caffeine is affecting my breathing when I run.  Tonight I was going out of breath at about 3 minutes into the 5 minute.  Sunday night I didn't have that happen.  So, as my cousin has been pointing out; not only will dropping the soda/pop help drop the weight, it'll also make my running easier.  Another factor might have added to it is that I ran later than usual and my allergy medication was wearing off pretty badly by the end of the run (a runny nose when you're running really, really, really sucks.)

Week 4 Day 1 of C25K IN 'DA BOOKS!

FINALLY!!
  1. Warm Up - 5 Minutes
  2. Jog - 3 Minutes
  3. Walk - 90 Seconds
  4. Jog - 5 Minutes
  5. Walk - 2.5 Minutes
  6. Jog - 3 Minutes
  7. Walk - 90 Seconds
  8. Jog - 5 Minutes
  9. Cool Down - 5 Minutes
Yes, that's week 4 in a nutshell.  I admit, it wasn't pretty and the last 5 minute jog was more like 4 minute jog with some really fast walking at the end.

I can really see that this is probably going to be a repeater week, as looking ahead to Week 5 has the first jog that a lot of people quit the program over.  W5D3 is a 20 minute jog.  I think if I repeat week 4 I'll have more stamina to go into week 5.

This probably puts me at looking to enter a real 5K race sometime this summer.  I see that a hometown of some family members has a 5K race near the end of July, which is sometimes around our family reunion time.  It'd be kinda neat to do that one with a possibility of having some family support.  No reunion plans have been made yet, so I'll have to keep open on planning anything firm.

I'm also hoping that the cool and rainy weather will soon be over and I can start giving actual "road" running a start.  All is fine and good on the treadmill, but it still isn't like running outside.  I'm wondering if I'll do better or worse outside.

Thanks for reading!  Regards,

~Kipp
